First Holiday Bazaar draws crowd

The inaugural Holiday Bazaar in the CNMI drew hundreds of spectators and consumers yesterday as they shopped and took a look around for the best gift items this holiday season.
Organizer Lydia Tan said the bazaar was the first time Brilliant Star School put up such an event on Saipan. She said she was very overwhelmed with the turnout for the project. She said the school aimed at gathering parents of the school and members of the community to a one-day fun-filled weekend and get to collect their early Christmas giveaways and presents.
Tan said more than 16 volunteers and vendors put up booths inside the Pedro P. Tenorio Multi-Purpose Center in Susupe.
Brilliant Star School teacher Trish Copeland and CNMI resident doctor Ben Sawyer set up a booth where they showcased and sold some of their artwork. Joe Weaver, Sebastian Camacho, Lisa Black, Leila Clark, Cynthia Mendel, and Nancy Provido also put up booths.
Other booths in the bazaar were put up by Marianas Eye Institute, Isabella Gifts, Leis on Arrival, Judy’s Antique, Mojica’s Carolinian Crafts, Saipan Photolab, Claybodies Ceramic Studio, J and J Toy Store, and several schoolbooks stores participated in the bazaar.
Brilliant Star’s Copeland said the bazaar was also a fundraising activity for the school since the school will be opening nine to 12 classrooms in fall of 2006. She said she also was quite pleased with the turnout of the bazaar considering it was the first time the school organized such an event.
Balloons and other ornaments adorned the door entrance and the stage, where children and guests posed for souvenir photos.
Adding to yesterday’s merriment was entertainment in the morning and in the afternoon provided by local artists. Morning performances included Ed Johnson and Company, Peter B. Loyola, and Glushko’s Academy of Performing Arts. Afternoon performances included ukulele players from Saipan Community School, violinists and vocalists from Eucon International School, and dancers from Glushko’s Academy of Performing Arts.
