Failure to appear in court lands two men in hot water
Superior Court Associate Judge Kenneth Govendo ordered yesterday the arrest of two defendants who failed to appear in a hearing.
Govendo directed Department of Public Safety Commissioner Juan I. Wabol to arrest Vicente Wabol Kaipat and Daniel Sablan and bring them to court immediately.
In a separate bench warrant, Govendo imposed a $1,000 cash bail for Kaipat and $500 cash for Sablan.
The judge issued the warrant after the defendants failed to show up during the scheduled status conference.
Only the defendants’ counsel and the prosecutor appeared in court.
Kaipat later told the court that he could not make it because he was sick.
The status conference was originally set on Dec. 13, 2005, but Kaipat was reportedly then confined at the Commonwealth Health Center. The court reset the hearing to yesterday.
The status conference for Sablan was first set on Dec. 10, 2005, but the defendant failed to appear in court. The hearing was then re-scheduled to yesterday.
Court records show that Kaipat was charged with four counts of forgery for the alleged issuance of four checks owned by Asia Pacific Overseas Inc. in June and July 2004.
Kaipat allegedly defrauded the company in the total amount of $2,100.
Sablan was charged with assault and battery for allegedly slapping a woman on the face in the presence of a child on March 14, 2005.
The defendants pleaded not guilty.
