BOE chair calls for more parental involvement
Re-elected Board of Education chair Roman C. Benavente is calling on parents to get more involved in the Public School System’s quest for higher quality education in the CNMI.
Benavente said the PSS, BOE, and parents should all work together with the local government to achieve the system’s academic goals for the new year.
“Parents need to participate to alleviate a lot of issues in schools,” he said, at the same time pointing out that parental involvement in schools would enhance the academic standing of their children.
Parents have been involved in the past but not enough to actually affect the academic condition and status of their children, he said.
“We have to be more concerned with how our kids are doing in schools,” Benavente said.
He conceded that most parents in the CNMI work, which makes it very hard for them to check on their children, but he encouraged them to be more involved for the sake of their children’s future.
Benavente was re-elected to the BOE’s top post on Monday during the board’s general election, winning the seat by two votes. He said he appreciates the confidence showed by the board for his leadership.
Benavente earlier said the board has to work with the new administration. He said parents should join the BOE in pushing for the local government’s approval of the $50 million budget that PSS has been asking for this fiscal year.
