The Department of Public Works will hold a four-day hydraulics training for DPW employees starting today. The seminar is also being extended to DPW employees from Rota and Tinian.

The National Highway Institute Federal Highway Administration will conduct the course, dubbed “Introduction to Highway Hydraulics Course.”

DPW spokesman Felipe Atalig said the course aims to provide a broad overview of basic highway drainage concepts. It is funded by the NHI FHA.

The training will be held from 8:30am to 4:30pm from Jan. 17 to 20, at the Aqua Resort Club’s Rey Lounge in San Roque.

Acting DPW Secretary Jose Demapan said the training would provide fundamental hydraulic concepts, to be followed by an open-channel flow principles and design of stable channels and pavement drainage. The presentation will conclude with an introduction to concepts and design of energy dissipaters. “A portable hydraulic flume will be set up in the classroom for the participants to observe numerous hydraulic principles,” said Demapan.

At the end of the training, Demapan said participants should be able to calculate design discharge using the “rational method or regression equation procedures and apply the continuity and energy equation to solve practical design problems,” among many others.

The target participants for the training are entry-level engineers or engineering technicians who are performing highway drainage calculations on transportation facilities. “It will also be useful as a refresher course on hydraulic fundamentals for experienced personnel,” he added.
