Tom Aguon leads Fil-Taga Golfer of the Year tourney
Tom Aguon had a good start to his weekend as he led after the first round of the Fil-Taga 2005 Golfer of the Year Tournament at the Laolao Bay Golf Resort.
Despite getting off to a rough start, Aguon slowly got his form back and used a strong performance in the back nine to take a one shot lead Saturday.
With his shots going his way in the final nine, Aguon was able to move to the top of the leaderboard with a net score of 67. After completing all 18 holes, Aguon posted a gross score of 87, and saw 20 strokes drop off courtesy of his handicap.
Aguon had his share of trouble in the front nine but still survived with a 50. He then pulled things together and recorded the best score in the back nine by firing a 37.
Right behind Aguon are Jhun Calma, Henry Bautista, and Father Manny Corcuera.
Calma finished with a gross score of 85 and had his 17 handicap work its magic to sit in second place with a net score of 68. He had 45 strokes in the front-nine and closed on a high note by shooting a 40 in the back-nine.
Just a stroke behind Calma and two off the lead was Bautista, who finished with a net score of 69. He shot a 45 in the front and 43 in the back nine for a gross score of 88, and sports a 19 handicap.
Father Manny is just a stroke behind Bautista with a net score of 70. He started off strong with a 39 in the first half of his 18-hole journey, then closed with a 47 for a gross score of 86, which dropped because of his 16 handicap.
The four went back to work for Day 2 yesterday on the golf resort’s east course, with Father Manny and Aguon paired up and Bautista pairing with Calma.
As of press time, official results of the second round were not available. Day Two was held simultaneous with the Fil-Taga January Ace of the Month Tournament.
Others who were in the Top 10 as of Saturday include William Retardo (73), Nono Bostre (74), Lito Mendoza (75), Greg de Torres (76), Jhun Dela Cruz (77), and Edgar Abalos (77).
