The 2005 Fil-Taga Golfer of the Year Tournament had a historic finish over the weekend as two players were tied after two rounds of play at the LaoLao Bay Golf Resort.

In an interview, tournament director Ted Malaran said both Jhun Calma and Henry Bautista, who were among the top six after the first round, moved ahead in the leader board and finished on top with identical scores.

With that, Malaran said the golfer of the year title would be determined by a four-hole playoff on Feb. 19.

“This is the first time we’ve ever had a tie and will need a playoff to determine the winner,” Malaran said.

Malaran said Bautista and Calma would compete for the title in two par-4 holes, one par-3, and a par-5, with the lowest score determining the champion, who will receive $500. Also, two holes will be from the front nine, while the other two will be played on the back nine.

Malaran said the playoff would coincide with the Fil-Taga February Ace of the Month Tournament. The association has yet to determine which course the tournament will be held on.

Newly elected Fil-Taga president Jun “Tiger” Dela Cruz also disclosed that he was able to secure a sponsor for the playoff, which ensures that the runner-up golfer will also receive a prize.

“RNV Construction will sponsor the playoff, so both golfers will be able to go home with a prize,” he said.

After round one, Calma finished with a gross score of 85 and had his 17 handicap work magic to sit in second place with a net score of 68, just one stroke behind leader Tom Aguon. He had 45 strokes in the front-nine and closed on a high note by shooting a 40 in the back nine.

Just a stroke behind Calma and two off the lead was Bautista, who finished with a net score of 69. He shot a 45 in the front and 43 in the back nine for a gross score of 88, and sports a 19 handicap.

Both were able to continue to play well Sunday, resulting in them overtaking Aguon for the lead.

As of press time, official results of the second round were not available. Day 2 was held simultaneous with the Fil-Taga January Ace of the Month Tournament.
