No Zone steamrolls past P&S
Cagers of defending champion No Zone were in a zone of their own down the stretch of their bout against Procurement and Supply Monday night, cruising to 115-81 victory in the ongoing 2006 Inter-Government Basketball League at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
It was still anybody’s ball game after the first half. However, No Zone players were determined to distance themselves and did so courtesy of an explosive second half that resulted in the 34-point victory margin.
No Zone started off on the right foot as veteran Ed Diaz fueled a strong first quarter with 11 points as No Zone jumped ahead for a nine-point advantage, 30-21.
P&S came charging back in the second quarter, kept pace with their quicker opponents, and was able to inch a bit closer. With Ray Takai connected on two triples and Ben Pangelinan and Edgar Pangelinan each hitting a triple, P&S was able to move within seven points, 45-52, at the break.
The small deficit soon turned into a big problem for P&S as No Zone slowly increased their lead with a balanced attack.
Already with a 15-point lead heading into the payoff period, 77-62, No Zone showed no mercy and threw in their full-court defensive pressure that forced several turnovers. No Zone had 11 players score in the final 10 minutes as they outscored their opponents, 38-19, to finish strong.
Diaz led No Zone with a game-high 33 points, while John Sablan and Jason Sablan pumped in 15 and 13 points. Ned Norita was also a force and contributed 12 points.
Mike Muna led P&S with 18 points, while Takai and Mike Guerrero finished with 16 points apiece. Edgar Pangelinan also supported them with 12 points.
The first game between Legislature and Ports Police was canceled as Ports Police withdrew from the competition.
