MCS green thumbs invade public library
Sixty junior high school students from Mount Carmel School shared their green thumbs with the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library yesterday morning, planting more than 100 seedlings provided by CNMI Forestry.
MCS juniors’ adviser Rosiky F. Camacho said the the tree planting, which started as early as 8am, was in line with the ongoing Catholic Schools Week that started Sunday and will run until Feb. 3.
Library’s acting director Julie Allen said she is very thankful for the support and assistance of MCS’ junior students in planting the seedlings. Allen said the beautification project was held in time for the March opening of the library’s new children’s section.
CNMI Forestry staff members Victor Guerrero, Jason Ruleket, and Ben Cepeda were also present during the activity and helped the students in planting the seedlings, which were all ornamental plants.
Aside from the tree planting at the library assigned to MCS juniors, Camacho said other students from the school were also spread all over Saipan and helped clean up and beautify the island.
MCS freshmen, for instance, went down to Sugar Dock and picked up garbage and other waste materials that could possibly contaminate the sea.
The sophomores, for their part, were scattered around Mount Carmel Cathedral to clean the surroundings, while the seniors went to Sister Remedios Early Childhood Development School for a reading session with toddlers.
