Gov. Benigno R. Fitial has appointed four new trustees to the Marianas Public Land Trust, including business leader Marian Aldan-Pierce.

Fitial made the appointments Monday before leaving for Japan to meet with potential investors.

Pierce will represent the women sector in the Trust. The other new trustees include Gregoria F. Omar, who represents the Carolinian community; and Alvaro Santos and John Edward Untalan, who represent Saipan and Tinian, respectively.

Last week, Fitial disclosed the planned appointments without disclosing yet the identities of the prospective appointees, as part of addressing issues concerning the Trust, such as alleged misuse of public funds.

Fitial’s special legal counsel, Howard Willens, said the appointments would help the new administration implement reforms at the agency, while addressing the legal obstacle posed by the agency being constitutionally created.

Willens explained that the new trustees could steer the Trust toward implementing the reforms of the new administration without the need to amend the Constitution’s provisions relating to the agency.
