Car sales down 20 percent

Car sales in the CNMI showed a 20-percent decline as of February this year compared with the same period last year.

Commonwealth Auto Dealer’s Association said that local dealers have sold 209 cars from January to February 2006—a 19.62-percent decline compared with the 260 cars sold during the same period last year.

On a monthly basis, CADA said that February 2006 sales totaled 91, which is 17.27 percent lower than the same month last year.

In February 2006, local dealers sold 50 sedans, 18 trucks, six vans, and 17 sports utility vehicles.

Joeten Motors maintained its lead for the second month of the year, registering 40 cars sold, which represents 44 percent of the market share.

Microl Corp., which used to top the monthly sales, sold 28 cars last month, while Triple J Motors sold 23.

The CADA report showed that Toyota, which is sold by Microl Corp., remains the top choice of motorists in the CNMI.

From January to February 2006, Toyota sold 65 cars. Other top choices are Nissan, with 31 sold cars; Honda, with 23; Ford, with 22; Hyundai, with 21; and Mazda, with 20.

For February alone, Toyota sold 25. This is followed by Ford, with 13; Honda, with 11; Nissan, with nine; Hyundai and Mazda, with eight each; Kia and Mitsubishi, with seven each; and GM/Chevrolet, with three units sold.

Microl Corp. sells Toyota and Chevrolet while Joeten Motors sells Nissan, Ford, Honda, and Kia.

Triple J Motors sells Hyundai, Mitsubishi, Isuzu, Suzuki, Subaru, and Mazda.
