The Bank of Hawaii donated yesterday a check worth $2,000 to the American Red Cross-NMI Chapter for the latter’s 20th annual walkathon event this month.

“It’s part of our efforts to support the local community,” said BoH senior vice president CNMI district manager John Sheather.

The bank has been on island for about 40 years now.

ARC-NMI walkathon co-chair John Guerrero called on the public yesterday to participate in this year’s walkathon, set on March 18. The event will take place on all three islands simultaneously.

On Saipan, the event starts at 6am at 4-H building just next to the Sabalu Market in Susupe. Participants will walk from that area to the Fishing Base in Garapan and back.

“It’s not only a fundraising event but something that promotes health and fitness. It’s a worthwhile project,” said Guerrero during the check presentation at the BoH office in Puerto Rico yesterday.

He said other activities include a health fair, obstacle course, and games.

“There will be a mini-carnival,” he said.

Participants who raise $15 each will get a T-shirt and a Red Cross pouch. Those who raise $30 will get a T-shirt, a Red Cross pouch, and sports towel. Those with $50 and above donations will get all the free items plus a tote bag.

Guerrero said ARC-NMI raised $50,000 in last year’s walkathon, mainly through tickets or pledge forms sold by students.

“We’re shooting at the same number this year,” he said.

Guerrero said volunteering at ARC-NMI has been very fulfilling. “It’s a nice opportunity to give back to the community,” he said.

He began co-chairing the walkathon three years ago. Last year, he was the sole chairman of the event. This year, he co-chairs the event with Mili Saiki.

Proceeds from the event stay in the ARC-NMI, he said.

The organization provides vital emergency disaster relief and training, comprehensive workplace health and safety programs, among others.
