The Board of Education has denied reports that Education Commissioner Rita H. Inos would be getting $100 per day as compensation for agreeing to extend her tenure.

Board chair Roman C. Benavente confirmed yesterday that the board had extended Inos’ contract with the Public School System until June 9 of this year. He clarified, though, that Inos is extending her services without pay.

He said the commissioner, who lives on Rota, would only be getting housing and transportation allowance.

Board special assistant Perry Tenorio also confirmed that the BOE had agreed to Inos’ extension during last week’s regular monthly board meeting.

He said the commissioner’s extension memo stated that she would not be receiving any monetary compensation except for her housing and transportation during her remaining term this school year.

Meanwhile, the board said it is still accepting applications for Inos’ soon-to-be vacated position, saying it is seeking “a student-centered and exemplary educational leader” to serve as the commissioner, to start no later than July 1, 2006.

PSS had expressed earlier that the candidate for Commissioner of Education must be a dynamic, motivated educational leader with a collaborative management style and excellent communications skills who has demonstrated a commitment to educational excellence.

“Additionally, the successful candidate will be one who can demonstrate knowledge and experience in applying current education research and practices and a clear record of improving student achievement. The successful candidate must demonstrate organizational knowledge and skills,” PSS said.

The vacancy came about due to the retirement of Inos, who successfully served the CNMI education system as commissioner since 1998.

Candidates for the positions will have the following duties and responsibilities: will serve as chief executive officer of PSS, responsible for all of its operations and activities; will report to BOE; will be appointed by the BOE for a term of four years “but serves at the pleasure of the board.
