2006 Liberation Day committee eyes more candidates
This year’s Liberation Day commemoration is looking at expanding its Queens pageant candidates to at least 10 to 12 contestants.
According to Liberation Day Queens Committee chair Laila Y. Boyer during last week’s meeting, she is aiming to enlist 10 to 12 candidates for this year’s Liberation Day Queen royal court. Boyer said the number is just right to complement the 60th anniversary of the Liberation of Camp Susupe.
Boyer said she is currently finalizing the application kit for the prospective candidates.
“I’ve been receiving calls already,” she told the committee, adding that callers are anxious to get started for the pageant, which involves ballot selling as part of the criteria for winning the crown.
This year’s committee chairman, Tony LG. Cabrera, suggested that Boyer look into other options to make it more attractive for prospective candidates to join. He suggested involving schools in selling the Queen’s ballots. Schools can have a share in the total sales of the candidates, possibly 5 percent or less.
Boyer said she would look into this, although based on previous experience, candidates usually prefer to get all their share of the sales. Cabrera recommended that Boyer consider a more attractive sharing scheme for the Queens Committee.
Meanwhile, the extensive grounds of the American Memorial Park may be the next site of the Liberation Day festivities this June, according to Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela.
Tudela said during the fifth Liberation Day Committee meeting held recently that their request to use the original site eyed, the Garapan Fishing Base, has yet to be granted by the Department of Public Lands.
The mayor said he would still have to follow up with acting Public Lands Secretary John Del Rosario next week to finalize the venue for the yearly celebration.
