A brilliant kite festival at Navy Hill
Scores of colorful kites dotted the brilliantly blue skies over Navy Hill yesterday morning when Brilliant Star School gathered parents and local guests for its first Kite Festival and Food Fair at the baseball field on Navy Hill.
Brilliant Star principal Trish Copeland, who assisted parents and children during the kite flying event, said the organizing committee is very pleased with the turnout of the event, the proceeds of which would go to the acquisition of classroom materials for the school’s newly built classroom.
Several competitions also livened up the event yesterday, including kite making contests, shirt decoration contests, and highest kite flying contest, among many others.
Parent James Montenegro’s triangular red, white and blue kite soared over that of the other participants yesterday. He bagged the first place for the highest kite flown during the event.
Copeland said Montenegro’s preparation paid off. She said the winner called his dentist mother in the mainland and asked for at least 2,000 meters of dental floss that he used for the competition.
“He said he had enough string to fly his kite all over Saipan,” she said, laughing.
Montenegro won an overnight stay at the Saipan Grand Hotel, among other prizes.
For the food fair, Copeland said, parents were divided into groups by ethnicity to prepare and sell food from their country of origin. There were Chinese, Filipino, Japanese and American food that the parents sold to guests and visitors.
The kites were sold for $3 each. The colorful kites were imported from China.
Copeland, on behalf of the organizing committee for the event, thanked their supporters for making the event a reality: Topnotch, Tan Holdings, Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan, Saipan Grand Hotel and Shirley’s Coffee Shop.
