The Marianas March Against Cancer is once again asking the cooperation and assistance of the community for this year’s MMAC’s 4th annual fundraising event.

The March will be held on March 12 to 13 at the Hopwood Jr. High School track and field from 6pm to 6am.

MMAC chair Tricia Tudela and recruitment head Reyna Malone graced yesterday’s Rotary Club of Saipan’s weekly meeting at the Hyatt Regency Saipan, during which she spoke about how the business community in the CNMI could extend its help in the fight against cancer.

Tudela and Malone distributed “yellow packets,” including letters of invitation to this year’s “relay for life.”

Themed “One Community. One Journey,” this year’s March Against Cancer is committed to raising money to increase awareness in the prevention of cancer as well as to support those patients and families who are battling the disease. The event also aims to support research efforts to find a cure for cancer.

Tudela said proceeds from the event would go to the development of the first Cancer Registry for the CNMI.

“The CNMI Cancer Registry will provide vital information on cancer cases on island that may lead to the attainment of federal grants and other assistance to expand our existing resources,” Tudela said.

MMAC also gives everyone an opportunity to celebrate the victory of cancer survivors and remember those who have lost the fight, said Tudela. “Team Courage is the name we have given to our survivors who will be honored on the evening of the event.”

Malone said this year’s Relay for Life would again include the Survivor’s Lap and the Luminary Ceremony, where thousands of paper bag with lamps inside would be lighted around the field.

Malone said the committee is asking the business sector to help this year by forming teams or through cash donations.
