TJ 5 Star leaned on its veteran-laden lineup to win the Wednesday Night Mixed League, which ended last April 5 at the Saipan Bowling Center.

With its all-star cast made up of perfect game bowler Robert Talavera, former youth kegler Simon Manacop, and tried-and-tested veterans Raul and Ariel Dumapit, Ronald Epan, Jun Carillo, and Arnel Del Rosario, TJ 5 Star finished the season with a 69-27 win-loss slate, more than eight wins ahead of its nearest pursuer.

Talavera, who rolled a 300 while playing in the tournament last Feb. 15 and serves as team captain, attributed TJ 5 Star’s victory to teamwork, hard work, and faith in each other’s ability on the bowling lanes.

He said his co-players always seem to strive to be the best they could be week in and week out.

Talavera said that this quest for perfection was even the fuel that inspired and sustained him during his pursuit of every bowler’s dream, the perfect game, that fateful evening more than a couple of months ago.

Talavera said the championship was TJ 5 Star’s fourth title in the six years the team has been together. He said TJ5 Star was used to be known as Robert’s Team, in an obvious tribute to the squad’s centerpiece.

So overpowering was TJ 5 Star during the season that the team had practically sewn up the championship with still two playing weeks to go in the league. It was a true testament of the team’s talent, cohesiveness, and cooperation that TJ 5 Star also was able to lead the league wire to wire, from the start of the competition until the end.

“Everyone just really, really played well,” said Talavera.

Talavera thanked the team’s sponsor, TJ 5 Star, for having trust and confidence in them again this year and that despite the hard economic times, the company still agreed to cover the team’s entry fee the past season.

Golden Lobster finished a far second to TJ 5 Star with a 60.5-35.5 win-loss mark, followed by SBC/J’s Restaurant (55.5-40.5), JET Holdings Co. (53-43), Kalakas (51-45), and Microl-Toyota (48-48). All aforementioned teams finished in the money list and all of them took home between $620 to $100 in cash rewards.
