What makes a peaceful campus? Carmona says it is a place where people are smiling and laughing. Her classmates in the fourth grade class of Mr. Gilles talk about a campus that it is safe and comfortable, where kids do come and learn.

Peace is the current buzz heard around San Vicente Elementary School. During the kick-off ceremonies held on campus yesterday, children and teachers welcome the year with a big victory sign for peace.

School principal Martha Habberman said they want to have a renewal on peace following the holidays. Thus, the campaign on Peace Builders was launched.

Funded under the safe and drug free grant, Peace Builders use four principles which basically speak about positive vibes. It is designed to reduce aggression while enhancing learning.

“Students are taught with these principles by infusing concepts into instructional program,” said vice- principal Janette Villagomez.

Classes usually start the day with a 30-minute discussion on character. A workshop was held to familiarize teachers with its strategies to incorporate character building with social studies, math and language arts.

To measure the impact of this campaign, an evaluation will take place sometime this year.

However, success stories were recorded in a number of schools in the mainland which used Peace builders like Tucson, Salinas, Riverside and San Bernardino.
