•In 1997, 12.5 percent of the 1,758 cases of diabetes in the CNMI were Carolinians which is an 11 percent rate verses 3.1 rate in the U.S.
Effects
•Amputation of lower limbs from diabetes complications is 12.8 percent in the CNMI and only 8.3 percent in the U.S.
•The most frequent cause of blindness in the U.S is diabetes — some 50 percent of all cases. (Dr. Korham)
•Diabetes can cause what is called “end stage kidney failure” and is why the many CNMI citizens are on what is called dialysis
•Diabetes can cause high blood pressure, and cardiovascular, or heart related problems. When untreated, these can lead to death at an early age.
•Diabetes can cause disabilities which result in unemployment, a lower quality of life, and higher medical costs to the family and the community.
•Complications from diabetes can be the underlying cause of many types of fatal illnesses.
