PSS to expand after school programs
The Public School System joins the highly competitive federal grant dubbed as the 21st Century Community Learning Center to expand its after school programs for the islands of Saipan, Tinian and Rota.
Described by Commissioner of Education Dr. Rita H. Inos as a “a very ferocious competition”, PSS submits a proposal that will secure over $200,000 federal funding to expand the Lina’la Malawasch Academy and after school programs on Tinian and Rota.
The PSS joins the race as a rural member of the Local Educational Agency that will allow LMA to pursue parenting skills training and specialized literacy program.
This future funding will enable PSS to increase LMA’s population to 60 students and to gather 120 parents in the parenting workshop.
For Tinian, the center at the high school will provide after school, Saturday sessions, intercession and summer recreational programs to its youth who do not have organized activities. The PSS also proposed additional funding for alcohol free alternative programs on Tinian.
The PSS plans to expand the technology center at Rota High School by adding new computers with internet access. The school has successfully hurdled the distance and resources barriers using modern technology and hopes to open this avenue to the entire community. Its computer and internet education will be opened to all school age youth on Rota.
During the fiscal and budget committee meeting yesterday, members of the Board of Education approved this CNMI-wide proposal in seeking additional federal grants which will allow PSS to expand its after school programs.
