Officials of the Public School System and the Department of Public Health will expand the School-based Nutrition and Physical Activity Partnership Program (SNAPP) to include the grandparents and parents of school children.

After hearing reports about death of young adults, representatives from DPH yesterday met with school principals and PSS officials in trying to establish a joint campaign to promote a physically fit aging community.

Both agencies will tap the on-going SNAPP activities in various schools to include the mature population in the CNMI.

Taking off from SNAPP, schools are encourage to support the participation of Man Amkos in their daily organized physical activity opportunities.

Various school fora of healthy living should likewise include the aging population.

The DPH plans to officially kick off this effort during the World Health Day on April 7. A “walk-around” activity will gather grandparents with their grandchildren. Health screening to check on their glucose, high blood pressure and other concerns is also scheduled during this affair. A healthy lunch buffet will be served.

Following this kick off ceremony, schools are asked to start their respective campaigns in bringing adults to participate in healthy lifestyle activities.

A competition will take place in September or October where schools will fight for a reward in bringing in the most number of Man Amkos during walkathon.

Most schools in the CNMI are participants to the SNAPP which serve fruit drinks, nutritious snacks and meals on campus. Together with this healthy menu, schools also promote backyard gardening and bi-weekly walk. (Sheila D. Amor)
