Rota Leadership Memorial Service

One of the recent attractions on the island of Rota is the improvement of the Melchor S. Mendiola Park. In addition to park improvement, the park will also be known as the Melchor S. Mendiola Leadership Memorial Park.
Park improvement includes the erection of a 40 feet peace monument with a pandana fruit at the top. “The peace monument depicts the wishes of our people for peace among our community in Rota as well as with neighboring islands and the world, while the Pandana fruit represents strength in unity among all our leaders, past, present and future in their collective dedication to make life better for our people,” Mayor Benjamin Manglona stated.
On May 31, 1999, the Office of the Mayor, in conjunction with the Rota Legislative Delegation, 7th Rota Municipal Council, government departments and agencies and the community will hold a memorial service for our leaders who have passed away and at the same time dedicate the park to all leaders for their unselfish dedication to public service. Mass will be said at the San Francisco De Borja Church at 5:00 p.m. and memorial services will follow at Melchor Mendiola/Leadership Memorial Park.
“The names of all our leaders in the past, present and future will be inscribed in the four octagons around the peace monument and hopefully will inspire our children to aim for the stars as they prepare themselves for the uncertainties of tomorrow” Mayor Manglona said.
In view of the National Holiday honoring our fallen soldiers for their sacred sacrifice, the leadership memorial service is intended to share this solemn occasion for those who sacrificed their life for the betterment of mankind, be it mortal combat or dealing with the complexities of everyday life.
