Liberation Queen kicks off July 4 celebration
The Saipan Mayor’s Office yesterday presented to the media 10 lovely candidates who will vie for the Liberation Queen title as part of the Fourth of July celebration in the CNMI.
The candidates, whose ages range from 14 to 24, will raise funds for their own education and other school programs on the island from proceeds of the sale of tickets.
While the organizers said it is not a beauty contest, the search will crown Liberation Queen and four other titles at stake.
According to Gereena Blas, about 20 percent of the gross sales will automatically go to each candidate for their own education while the rest will benefit programs promoting education to local youth.
All of the candidates pledged to increase awareness on the importance of education to further their aim of beauty with a purpose during the media presentation that was also attended by Miss NMI beauty pageant winners.
“This is different because we are not judged by how we look, but how much we have raised,” said one of the candidates Emily Atalig, 24, who joined the recent Miss NMI Universe pageant.
“We put efforts in enhancing beauty inside and out so that they can make a difference in their education,” said Sonya Pangelinan, a former Miss NMI International title holder who is one of the organizers.
Other Liberation Queen candidates said they are first timers in the beauty search arena and they also hope to compete in future Miss NMI pageants.
Aside from Atalig, others vying for the July 4 title are Carmen Demapan, Kristin Evangelista, Valentina Mori, Jocelyn Aldan, Carlene May Adriano, Janice King, Renee Taimayno, Janet King and Evelyn Elbo.
Among the supporters of the event are the reigning Miss NMI International Michelle Sablan and first runner-up Miyuki Hill. B. Saladores
