Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio yesterday signed a proclamation making May 24 to 31 a Memorial Week in the Northern Marianas to honor veterans who had fought for the American flag.

He said soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines who fought and died defending the world’s model of freedom, democracy and justice are deserving of lasting honor and the enduring appreciation of all Americans.

The Memorial Day celebration dates back to when Americans placed flowers on the tombs of civil war dead, grounding in each of the citizens the highest reverence for liberty and the toll it exacts.

“The flame of Americans’ courage is the world’s brightest one that will continue to light our path and illuminate our judgment as we uphold democracy and defend the ramparts of freedom the world over,” Tenorio said.

“As we recognize the tragic nature of war and its enormous human costs, so must we continue to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to bring peace,” the governor added.

He enjoined island residents to support activities and events lined up for the week for veterans.
