Inos: Support Sports Challenge
Commissioner of Education Rita H. Inos yesterday rallied the community and schools to give their all out support to the Northern Marianas Sports Challenge scheduled this summer.
“The local community needs this type of activity, particularly our at-risk students during summer. They are bringing the party here, let’s attend the party,” she told school principals.
From the presentation made by John Gonzales, special assistant for policy and research, the nine-day sports activities, which will start on July 7, is designed to develop a local pool of future athletes.
Oganizers of the Sports Challenge are hoping the activities will attract tourists, encourage the youths to engage in sports and keep them out of drugs, and give a lift to the slumping economy.
For a $10 ticket, students can avail of the sports clinics as well as participate in the track events, while a family of four minor kids can enjoy the entire sports challenge by paying $50 for the whole package.
Among the professional athletes who have confirmed their attendance are Cleo Miller, former fullback of the Cleveland Browns; and Olympic swimming medalist Daichi Suzuki of Japan.
Other activities of the Sports Challenge will be held on Tinian and Rota.
