NMC to complete gym this summer
The $1.4 million multi-purpose gymnasium of the Northern Marianas College which completion date has been pushed back several times is set to finally welcome students this coming school year.
According to the NMC report recently submitted to the office of the governor, the facility is scheduled to be completed next month after it was promised to students since 1998.
Occupying a land area of around 12,000 square feet, NMC’s multi-purpose gym was however spared from poor construction contracts like the infamous gym of the Marianas High School.
Last year, the project was temporarily stopped after school officials aired concerns over early corrosion. Its design resembled NMC’s buildings which gave in to corrosion.
The Department of Public Works commissioned a reputable building manufacturing from Texas to prepare the re-design plan in addressing those concerns before the construction work.
The report said the facility meets the American uniform building code standards. It boasts of uninterrupted water supply and special lighting system, aside from its indoor courts, bleachers, classroom and offices.
Based on its original design, the gymnasium will have cafeteria and aerobics room. However, both add-ons will require a $2.8 million budget for the entire project.
Last month, college President Agnes McPhetres solicited additional funding for the gym through her daring sky diving act. She said donors have continued to call in until to date to help NMC complete its gymnasium.
In addition to this project, NMC has likewise completed the building “J” renovation where it houses the quiet study area, English Language Institute Listening Labs, Talent Search Study Room and student computer room.
