The paint colors of the building may look funny and flamboyant, but who cares? For Saipan movie fans, the opening of the Hollywood Theater is definitely a welcome fixture on the island.

Saipan movie goers used to have to settle for what’s being screened at the old movie house in Chalan Kanoa, or simply wait for video copies of current flicks.

“It’s time for Saipan to experience a state-of-the art movie facility,” says Kurtis Stegger, manager of Wallace Theatres Corp., a movie chain company that operates the Hollywood Theatre located next to Price Costco in San Jose. It opened last Sept. 8.

Brett Havlik, general manager of Wallace Theater Corp., said Saipan movie fans “can expect the same first-class movie theaters like the ones in New York.

“They can see the same products, and the same type of facilities, nothing less,” Havlik says.

Hollywood Theatre promises to play movies on first run. “Which means, if a new movie opens in Guam and in the mainland, it will also be shown at the same time here on Saipan. I don’t’ think Saipan is used to that,” says Stegger.

Wallace Theatres, which is based in Oregon, is operating 800 movie theaters all over the world. It is expanding throughout the Pacific rim and Hollywood Theatre is the latest facility it has established in this region, according to Stegger.

Wallace opened less than two years ago the 14-stadium Alabama Theatre in Guam. It also has theater facilities in Hawaii, American Samoa, Pohnpei, and Marshall Islands.

Hollywood Theatre has seven stadiums, each equipped with digital sound system. “With the digital sound system, all you get is the sound which the movie producer and director intend for you to hear,” Havlik explains.

Each stadium has rocking seats, rowed 14 inches higher than the front seat row to guarantee unobstructed view of the screen. Plus, “love seats” for lovers to cuddle up.

“The colors are exciting. The whole facility is exciting . We want to give Saipan people the best entertainment,” Stegger says.

Showing this week: Deep Blue Sea, Haunting, Iron Giant, Mystery Men, Bowfinger, American Pie, Thomas Crown, and Miss Kristina Moran. (MCM)
