Phenoms, Surf move to 2nd round

League scoring champion Freddy Pelisamen continued his scoring prowess, this time in the first round of the Saipan Rotary Club Youth Basketball league playoffs, erupting with 26 points and a career-high 24 rebounds to lead his team past Lebwel, 66-46.
Charleston Aiken also chipped in 13 points and grabbed 8 rebounds for the winners, while Lebwel was led by Kelvin Fitial’s season high of 8 points and Shane Ogumuro’s 10.
With the win, Phenoms will face the winner of today’s game between the Kagman Cougars and San Vicente Sunrisers on Friday.
In the second game, pennant runner-up, Get Covered Surf used a pressing half court defense to turn a close game into a rout with a 63-35 thrashing of the Saints.
In the first half the Saints employed a well executed half court passing game and stingy defense which halted Get Covered Surf’s ability to get their running game going. As a result, the first half ended with GCS ahead by one, 16-15.
Sensing upset, GCS turned to a half court trapping defense which resulted in steals and easy lay-ups, and the Saints just couldn’t cover.
Get Covered Surf were led by the trio of Frank Aldan, Carlos Aguon and Peter Mendiola with a combined score of 43 of the team’s 63 total points.
Ray Yabut and Chris Idip led a balanced scoring attack with 8 and 7 points, respectively.
