Educational opportunities for NMC students

Northern Marianas College President Agnes McPhetres has announced a new educational opportunity available at the University of Hawaii-Hilo for students who want to pursue a baccalaureate degree.
She said starting in Fall 1999, the three colleges of UH-Hilo the Colleges of Arts and Sciences; Agriculture, Forestry, and Natural Resource Management; and Hawaiian Language will accept students holding Associate of Arts degree from U.S.-accredited institutions as automatically meeting the General Education requirements for any degree program offered through these colleges.
NMC is a U.S.-accredited institution and with the new UH-Hilo in place, a student who has earned an Associate of Arts degree from the lone higher learning institution in the island can transfer to UH-Hilo and be accepted into the program.
“This represents a breakthrough in educational opportunity for CNMI college students,” said Dr. Barbara Moir, dean of Instruction. ‘Students who earn the Associate of Arts degree and who wish to transfer into a bachelors degree program will no longer need to have their transcripts evaluated on a case-by-case and course-by-course basis to determine which General Education requirements have already been completed and which have not –– at least, not if they plan to transfer to UH-Hilo. This new policy provides for the smooth transfer of NMC’s A.A. graduates into quality baccalaureate programs, at one of the best institutions of higher education in the Pacific region.”
UH-Hilo’s College of Arts and Sciences was ranked third in the entire Western Region in terms of academic excellence and student satisfaction based on a recent survey conducted by US. News and World Report.
