GTE asst. coach suspended
The Basketball Association of the Northern Mariana Islands (BANMI) Board has suspended GTE Pacifica Asst. Coach Danny Cabrera for the entire regular season and playoffs effective Nov. 30, 1999.
BANMI said in a press release that Cabrera was suspended for harassment and threatening the referees during a game between GTE and Marpac/Saipan Stevedore-Mark Sharks last Nov. 22, 1999 at Ada Gym.
At the same time, the board slapped GTE’s head coach with one game suspension that will take effect on Dec. 6, the team’s next game, for failing to control his bench. The board members imposed a 10-point penalty, which will be implemented on GTE’s next game.
The decision was reached during a meeting Tuesday night presided by BANMI vice president Juan V. Diaz. Association president Ray Lizama had to excuse himself from the deliberation, citing conflict of interest. His team was involved in the incident.
But Lizama warned all coaches and teams that the board members will not tolerate such abusive behavior. He said such misconduct will be dealt with accordingly.
During the board meeting majority also voted to adopt a resolution seeking to enforce stringent disciplinary action against those who would be found violating ground rules and by-laws. The board agreed to send suspension letter to concerned individuals and that each player who would commit a technical foul will be slapped with disciplinary action.
“With the implementation of the disciplinary action, this will lessen the harassment of either the table or game officials and this will…also eliminate fighting during or after the games,” BANMI said.
