TINIAN RUNWAY EXPANSION CPA may get FAA nod this week
The Commonwealth Ports Authority expects to get the green light this week from the FAA to hire a construction manager for the $20 million dollar Tinian runway project.
CPA Executive Director Carlos H. Salas is in Hawaii following up fee negotiation documents that were submitted to the FAA for approval earlier this month. Upon approval CPA will commence putting the C.M. contract together for final approval of the FAA and CPA.
Mr. Salas is also working to expedite the review process for the runway construction documents which were submitted to the FAA in late November.
The FAA’s stamp of approval is required before CPA may issue a invitation to bid, and Mr. Salas said it will take a minimum of three weeks before CPA gets the go ahead.
While the construction schedule has been affected by the FAA review process, CPA still expects to publish a bid invitation by latter part of January. In the meantime CPA and the FAA are working with the design consultant to address any possible deficiencies in hopes of avoiding costly change orders after construction begins.
CPA Board Member Ray M. Cing recently provided these details to members of the Tinian Legislative Delegation and the Mayor of Tinian for their information. To expedite the construction of the Tinian Runway Project, the delegation has pledged up to $9.9 Million, nearly half of the estimated $20 million runway price tag. The balance of the funding will come from the FAA, which to date has awarded grants totaling $9.4 million.
Construction on the 18-month project is tentatively scheduled for mid-February 2000 with an estimated completion date in the summer of 2001.
