Red Cross prepares for y2k

Storm, hazardous material spill, Y2K-related emergencies such as prolonged power outage and other disaster may happen anytime and anywhere. After a disaster, local officials and relief workers will be on the scene, but they cannot reach anyone immediately. It is best for your family to prepare for disaster before it happens.
Prepare your disaster supply kit before any disaster strikes.

Here are some ideas of what you may need in any disaster emergencies:

• Water: Store drinking water in plastic containers. It is recommended to store one gallon per person per day. This will include food preparation. Keep at least three to one week supply of water for each person in your household.

• Food: Store at least three days to one-week non-perishable food. Select food that require no refrigeration such as ready-to-eat canned meats, fruits and vegetables, canned juices, milk and soup. Include sugar, salt and pepper and high-energy food such as peanut butter, jelly and crackers. Don’t forget to store food for infants, elderly persons and persons on special diet. Store some vitamins and some comfort foods such as cookies and candies and or tea bags.

• First Aid Kit: Assemble a first aid kit with bandages, gauze pads and adhesive tapes, antiseptics, thermometer, petroleum jelly, cleaning agent or soap and latex gloves. Also include non-prescription drugs such as pain reliever, anti-diarrhea medication and laxatives. Be sure to store the first aid kit out of children’s reach.

• Personal hygiene supplies: Store garbage bags, toilet paper, paper towels, soap, disinfectants and other household sanitation supplies and feminine hygiene supplies.

• Special items: You may also need diapers and bottles for infants in your household. And don’t forget to store some special items that you may need for physically challenge people in your household.
