SGMA extends holiday cheer to community organizations
The Saipan Garment Manufacturer’s Association got into the spirit of giving this holiday week through three separate donations for the betterment of the community.
SGMA made a donation to Karidat, the social service organization that assists the needy, the Safe & Sober Foundation, which aims to reduce drunk & drugged driving on CNMI roads, and to the holiday lighting along Beach Road.
In its sixth year of annual donations to Karidat, SGMA Executive Director Richard A. Pierce presented a $2,500 check to Karidat Executive Director Angie Guerrero for the agency’s general operations.
The non-profit organization performs a myriad of services for the community, including crisis intervention, counseling to crime victims & troubled youths, and providing emergency food, shelter, & information to crime victims and nonresident workers.
SGMA also made a $1,000 donation to the Safe & Sober Foundation, which will help the organization (and Santa) bring candy and holiday cheer to the children of Saipan, Tinian, and Rota.
Safe & Sober is spearheaded by the CNMI Department of Public Safety and implements educational programs and conducts crime prevention activities to help reduce drunk and drugged driving on CNMI roads.
Earlier this month, SGMA contributed $2,500 to the Marianas Visitors Authority to sponsor a light sculpture in the image of a coconut tree, part of First Lady Sophie Tenorio’s millennium lighting project along Saipan’s Beach Road pathway.
“We were happy to help out each of these organizations,” said Mr. Pierce. “The lights along Beach Road look wonderful, and we’re hoping our gifts to Karidat and Safe & Sober help these organizations shine brightly as well, by doing some good for the community.”
SGMA represents 32 of the island’s 34 garment factories. Employing nearly 15,000 people, including 2,400 local residents, garment manufacturing is a driving economic force in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
