It would have stirred a controversy had the proposal came from the islands’ elected officials but it does not seem a big deal when it was offered by leaders of the 2nd Youth Congress.

Young legislators are seeking to extend their one-year term limit, which they intend to discuss during the second regular session of the CNMI Youth Congress on Saturday.

Speaker Angel Demapan said that aside from the extension of their current one-year term, the Youth Congress will also work at increasing the present quarterly sessions.

The speaker said one key issue that will be discussed during the second regular session of the youth legislative body would be the minimum and maximum age limit of those who may serve in the Youth Congress.

At the same time, work is now underway for the holding of the first annual CNMI Youth Conference which has been planned to be held in April to coincide with the Division of Youth Services’ “For the Children” campaign.

The Youth Congress is seeking the support of the DYS, the Board of Education and the Public School System to co-sponsor the first annual youth conference.

At the same time, the 2nd Youth Congress leadership has initiated a program that would help increase public awareness on the youth lawmaking body through a newsletter that will be published once each month.

“I hope that this will serve as a vital source of information in regards to the Youth Congress…[we] continue to work diligently to further enhance the lives of the youth and the entire community in the Commonwealth,” the speaker said.
