Food and Nutrition Council convenes on Wednesday
The Commonwealth Food and Nutrition Council invites the general public and media to its regular monthly meeting tomorrow, Wednesday, Feb. 9.
The Council will release its official progress report containing the statistics and information gathered on the status of health, disease, and action taken to bring about a healthier CNMI.
The Commonwealth Food and Nutrition Council will break into working subcommittees on Wednesday to review the Annual Plan of Action for these critical needs: Community Nutrition and Physical Activity, Food and Nutrition Monitoring, Food Security, and Food Safety, in addition to strategies to sustain the Council and its public education programs.
The Council consists of non-medical laymen in the CNMI who bring their agriculture, commodities, media, and import/export expertise to the Department of Public Health. As a result of the Food and Nutrition Council, two new groups emerged: the First Ladies Vision and SNAPP: School-based Nutrition and Physical Activities Partnership.
On Feb. 26 , there will be a workshop for mothers and teachers at the Northern Marianas College. The workshop is free. Topics include, children’s dental and health needs, basic food and nutrition requirements and explanations of the immunization programs. Everyone is welcome. The workshop begins at 8:00 a.m. at the Canteen Building “H.”
That workshop will be followed by the Commonwealth’s largest health symposium. The First Lady’s Vision and Commonwealth Council for the Humanities have teamed up to bring to the CNMI medical speakers, as well as local doctors.
The health symposium will focus on diabetes, how the use of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco cause several health problems, including breast and prostate cancer. The solution depends heavily on the food eaten at home, within the schools, and at cultural events in the CNMI. The health symposium is free. Child care is provided.
The CNMI Food and Nutrition Council welcomes new subcommittees members. All meetings are open to the public. The Wednesday session begins at 2:30 p.m. at the CHC café. Anyone interested in health care issues and nutrition, including the importation of foods and local agriculture, should participate in our community activities.
