S.O.P.H.I.A. Friendship Walk in May
Tagaman Inc., a non-profit organization established to undertake the annual Tagaman triathlon, has recently announced that it will be adding another event to be called S.O.P.H.I.A. (Saipan Outdoor Physical Invigorating Adventure) Friendship Walk which will be held on May 21, 2000, a day after the triathlon competition.
The event will consist of the 7K walk from American Memorial Park to Saipan Grand Hotel using the scenic beach road walk path. So far, about 40 participants from Japan has signed-up for this friendship walk. It is expected that more will be joining as the event date gets closer.
First Lady Sophia Tenorio will lead the walk.
The undertaking of this another international sporting event is the result of several requests from walking enthusiasts in Japan.
Tagaman Inc. president Bill Sakovich said “this is another example where existing sports facility on islands can be used to attract tourists to our islands.”
Walking tour is very popular in Japan, and Hawaii alone draws over 10,000 Japanese participants. Local participants are also encouraged to take part in the friendship walk.
The event is being supported by the Marianas Visitors Authority, Department of Public Safety and Tagaman Inc. This is also in line with the MVA’s slogan in promoting our islands as a “sports and leisure destination.”
Registration forms are available at MVA, Ada Gym and JM & Associates office in Fina Sisu. A registration fee of $20.00 will be charged to participants which will cover expenses for aid stations and unique souvenir T-shirts for walkers.
