MCS’ Sablan bags AG Cup title
Mt. Carmel High School senior Nathan Sablan bested four other high school representatives in the 17th Annual Attorney General’s Cup Speech Competition held at the House of Justice Friday.
This is the 4th time MCS has bagged the prestigious AG Cup title since the speech competition started in 1984.
Five high school seniors at Friday’s race delivered prepared speeches on whether the Constitutional Amendment that amends Article XVIII Section 5 of the Commonwealth Constitution (to provide that only persons of the NMI descent can vote on constitutional amendments affecting the protections against alienation of the land in
Article XII of the Commonwealth Constitution) is fair to the indigenous or non-indigenous people of the Commonwealth.
Mr. Sablan, in a lengthy speech, presented a clear-cut version of his views which kept judges and the audience at pace with his arguments.
As a result, he was chosen first place winner, followed by Airika Actouka from Northern Marianas Academy, and Carmen Indalecio of Marianas High School.
Mr. Sablan is the son of Eugene and Carmel Sablan. He has actively participated in the National Forensics League and is looking forward to attending a university in the mainland in fall.
As top prize winner, Mr. Sablan received $300 in cash, an overnight stay at the Tinian Dynasty Hotel and Casino for two and dinner at the Broadway restaurant.
Second placer Ms. Actouka took home $200 in cash plus a seafood buffet dinner for two at the Aqua Resort Club.
A hundred dollars and a Sunday brunch for two went to third place winner Ms. Indalecio.
Other participants, Ryan Camacho of Grace Christian Academy and Paul Murphy of Marianas Baptist Academy, also received Aqua Resort Club Sunday brunch gift certificates.
