THC forges partnership with OSHA
Frank Strasheim, OSHA regional administrator, met recently with top executives of Tan Holdings Corp. to review the company’s application for participation under the Excellence 2000, a safety partnership program offered by the federal official to SGMA members.
Tan Holdings, according to Mr. Strasheim, was the first partnership to be reviewed under the program. He said this is a significant step in light of what he has seen and heard about the company’s safety program and improvements that have made a positive impact on THC’s operations.
Ron Biggers, head of THC’s Office of Health and Safety Management, said Excellence 2000 provides employers like Tan Holdings an opportunity to establish a model workplace for safety and health.
Jack Torres, THC personnel director, commended Mr. Strasheim and his team for their commitment and leadership under the new OSHA. He praised the new OSHA mandate and underlying philosophy that have guided the federal agency’s reform initiatives: “protect people. . . promote results. . . get action.”
The Excellence 2000 seeks to ensure that safety is promoted and protected by those in the workplaces themselves managers and workers at the work site in partnership with OSHA. The partnership offers SGMA members a choice on how they will be regulated. This means that employers who choose to work with employees and with OSHA in reducing injuries and illnesses will find OSHA to be a willing partner.
Excellence 2000 does not in anyway change OSHA’s mission. The agency’s mission is clear and unwavering: “to assure so far as possible every working man and woman in the nation safe and healthful working conditions.” Saving lives, preventing injuries and illnesses, and protecting the health of America’s workers remain the agency’s mission and as vital as today as a when the Act was enacted twenty-nine years ago.”
