Private school plans juvenile camp
Officials of Eucon International School disclosed plans to set up a multi-million juvenile camp in an effort to help the government on its battle against juvenile delinquency.
Eucon president Dr. Christian Wei yesterday said that as part of the Eucon International School expansion program, plans for a Christian camp complete with facilities and workshop rooms is now underway.
Dr. Wei explained that Eucon at present is raising funds for the immediate construction of the $1 million multi-level juvenile camp that once in place, school administration will develop programs and hands-on skills for the hundreds of juvenile delinquents who will be admitted.
Aside from the workshop rooms, Dr. Wei said the camp would be equipped with cafeteria, auditorium, recreational rooms and another building to accommodate off-island visitors.
“The facility would be simple, clean, nothing fancy but would be comfortable for the youth,” he explained, adding that aside from honing the skills of hundreds of youth, the school administration will also set up family-oriented programs to afford parents a chance to spend quality time with their children.
He said with the alarming number of juvenile delinquents here in the NMI, there is a need to put up a juvenile camp which will redirect the path of the wayward youth and re-channel their energies to positive goals.
The continued increase in number of juvenile delinquents also alarmed the Division of Youth Service (DYS). Based on its report, there was an estimated six percent increase of juvenile offenses recorded in 1999 with at least 429 youth offenders charged.
