The Department of Lands and Natural Resources announced yesterday that the hunting season for specified wildlife species starts on Sept. 1 through Nov. 30, 2000.

All interested applicants who wish to apply for hunting permit, especially for sambar deer and game birds, must go through the required hunters’ orientation for regulation awareness and safety purposes before a hunting permit can issued.

The first session will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 30 at 9:00 a.m., the second session at 2:00 p.m. and the third session at 7:00 p.m. Another set of sessions will be held on Aug. 31.

Hunters who apply for hunting permit after the above dates will be oriented on a scheduled arrangement by the Division of Fish and Wildlife personnel.

Prohibited activities during hunting:

1. Hunt while under the influence of alcohol, narcotics, or other disabling drugs.

2. Take wildlife while riding in on any motorized vehicle, including automobiles, motorized bikes, motor-powered boats, helicopter or airplanes.

3. Take or pursue wildlife while riding on an animal.

4. Use fire or artificial light as an aid in taking wildlife, except that artificial lights may be used to hunt coconut and land crabs during specified season.

5. Discharge of a gun, bow and arrow, or cross bow in an attempt to take a game animal within a village or within 100 meters of an occupied human dwelling. It is likewise illegal to discharge such weapons across a public road, or within 25 meters of a road.

6. Use dogs to hunt anything except game birds.

7. Sell or barter game animals or game animal products with the exception of feral goats or feral pigs.

8. Possess any game animal, mounted specimen, antlers, skin, meat, or any part thereof without having a license valid at the time of kill or certificate of origin letter.

The department is also reminding the public that Public Law 12-8, or the Commonwealth Bird Protection Act of 2000, prohibits the hunting, trapping or harassing of the totot. Violators will face up to $1,000 in penalty and or 30 days in jail.
