Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio yesterday signed a proclamation declaring Oct. 8-14, 2000 as Fire Prevention Week in a move to increase public awareness on the devastation brought about by fires.

The Fire Prevention Week 2000 theme “Fire Drills: The Great Escape” emphasizes the importance of not only having a home escape plan, but also the practicing the drill.

Mr. Tenorio said developing and practicing a home escape plan at least twice a year is critical to safely escape from a real fire.

“Underestimating the power of fire and the time it takes to escape a home fire put people at a severe risk of fire death and injury,” he added.

The governor also commended the dedicated efforts of firefighters, safety advocates, emergency service providers and the assistance of the businesses, schools, service clubs and organizations in their safety efforts.
