Festival of Cultures to kick off this week
The CNMI will be hosting the 2nd International Festival of Cultures this week in celebration of the various indigenous cultures that have contributed to the cultural development of the Northern Marianas over the years.
The three-day event will kick off on Oct. 20, Friday at the American Memorial Park to be marked with the traditional tuba (local wine) toast followed by a weekend packed with entertainment and colorful activities.
Some 15 ethnic groups are expected to join the festivities through presentations of their respective cultures in the form of dances, arts displays, songs, and culinary exhibition of native dishes.
Governor Pedro P. Tenorio declared Oct. 20 to 22 as the CNMI International Festival of Cultures urging the public to observe the series of activities slated within each group’s own cultural village.
“The people of the Northern Marianas acknowledge the importance of each of the ethnic group’s contributions to our society, which enjoys fruits and benefits of cultural diversity as a whole,” said the governor in a proclamation.
Another activity to look forward to within the three-day celebration include the float parade which will start at the Carolinian Affairs Office to the American Memorial Park.
A grand cultural arts display will also be hosted by participating ethnic groups who will be putting up booths.
A variety of exciting ethnic performances, including singing, dancing and live music, will also be presented.
The festival of cultures is part of the Marianas Visitors Authority’s “Visit the Marianas 2000” campaign, which is targeted to attract more tourists to the islands. (MM)
