The SportsRock Spartans tamed the four-time high school flag football champions Tinian High School 44-12 in a front of a stunned crowd at Tinian Field Friday night.

The Stallions came out flying a hundred miles an hour, catching the Spartans off-guard at the beginning of the contest. Tinian drew first blood. Following an interception, Antonio Castro scored on a reverse from the five as the Tinian sideline erupted in cheers. The try for the two-point conversion failed.

When asked how the touchdown run felt, Castro shouted, “Glory!”: The Spartans answered back on their next possession when Bob “Gator” Coldeen, briefly reliving past glories, connected with Doug “White Shoes” Mauro on a 60 yard bomb to tie the game at 6-6.

From then on, it was all Spartans. Chris Nelson, SportsRock jock organizer, scampered 24 yards for a touchdown. Coldeen found Jeff “Just Throw Me The Ball” Callahan in the back of the endzone for the conversion, making it 14-6. The route was on as the Spartans posted 44 consecutive points.

Nelson, subbing for a sore-armed Coldeen, directed the offense on a long drive highlighted by a 35 yard completion to Mike Walsh who ran like Forrest Gump. Callahan capped the drive with a 2 yard touchdown reception. Mauro notched the two-point conversion on a reverse. The Spartans offensive line was anchored by muscle-bound Adam Turner and snapper Dale Roberts.

The Spartan defense complemented the offense with spectacular play. Mauro wowed spectators by weaving thru the entire Stallions team like a greased pig on a 55-yard interception return for a touchdown. Free safety Paul Torres also recorded an interception as Stallion quarterback Anthony Borja was continually pressured by defensive linemen Bruce “The Freak” Berline and Mark “Fair Labor” Zachares. A mobile Glen Palacios made numerous tackles.

Jonathan Aldan scored for the Stallions on the last play of the game to account for the final score.

The score never mattered to the THS cheerleaders who kept the spirit high with well-choreographed chants and dance routines.

The game was arranged for the Stallions as a tune-up for the PSS high school flag football championship tournament to be held at Hopwood Junior High School October 28/29. The Tinian Dynasty assisted with logistics.

Tinian football coordinator Don Farrell said he was thankful nobody got seriously hurt. The most biggest blow of the game occurred when Zachares got hit by his own teammate. Berline accidentally sunk his elbow into Zachares’ head, leaving him woozy and at one point asking, “Where are we anyway?”
