The Filipino Community in the CNMI, in cooperation with the Philippine Consulate, will start off the Christmas season with a colorful lantern festival on Dec. 10 2000 from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Nauru Building grounds, Susupe. This event is expected to be a visual treat for residents and another attraction for tourists in the CNMI.

The lantern festival will feature a Christmas lantern contest for group and individual categories. It will be the finale of a one-month preparation to come up with the most beautiful lantern.

A panel of judges will choose the winning lanterns based on the following criteria: originality, creativity, design, use of indigenous materials and relevance. The contest is open to the public.

Christmas lanterns are hung outside homes during the Yuletide season. The Philippine version is known as the parol and represents the Star of the Nativity. It comes in many shapes, sizes and materials and is known for adding color and beauty to village houses in the provinces as well as to urban homes in the Philippines.

Christmas lanterns, and the parol in particular, can have an enchanting and beautiful effect, especially at night and, together with other Christmas decorations, best captures the Christmas spirit.

Further details will be announced this week.
