After several inactive years, the Association of Commonwealth Teachers has vigorously reawakened following a large organizational meeting this past week. Participants included new and returning members from Marianas High, Hopwood and Koblerville. ACT’s two broad focus areas are to improve education for the students of the CNMI and to support teachers so they may better serve the students.

ACT is pleased to announce the group’s newly elected officers. They include veteran CNMI teachers: Sapuro Rayphand, president; Roger Ludwick, vice president; Ambrose Bennet, treasurer; and Angelyn Sills, secretary, each of whom has taught for PSS 10 years or more.

The Association of Commonwealth Teachers, a non-profit organization, is the only formal professional organization which exists in the CNMI specifically by and for teachers for the support of the profession of teaching and for the support of teachers collectively and as individuals. Due to the large turnover of teachers in the CNMI in recent years, the organization had become in active, but ACT is functioning once again. At last week’s meetings ACT decided to update the bylaws in the near future and to identify areas of interest wherein ACT. may become an effective organization.

All teachers, aides, and others interested in improving education by supporting the teaching profession are strongly encouraged to attend meetings and to take advantage of this forum for discussion and opportunity for involvement.
