Fiji election date set

SUVA, Fiji Islands – National elections will be held by March 2002, the interim government’s Cabinet announced Tuesday.

An Information Ministry statement said the elections would “return the, country to an elected Parliament and government” and would be held under a new constitution to be drawn up by a special review commission.

The last elected Fiji government was deposed May 19, following a coup by businessman George Speight.

Kiribati VP collapses, dies

TARAWA, Kiribati – Vice President Tewareka Tentoa collapsed and died in Parliament Tuesday, while delivering a statement on improving electrical services in the country.

A report from Tungaru Central Hospital said that the Vice President suffered from heart problems and low blood pressure.

Water shortage in northern Cook Islands

AVARUA, Cook Islands-A lack of rain has resulted in the rationing of water in the northern group of islands.

Households are now required to restrict the amount of water they use to just five gallons a day.

Anthony Brown, director of the Cook Islands National Disaster Management Office, said plans are under way to ship fresh drinking water to the affected areas from the main island of Rarotonga. (Pacific Islands Report)
