Tapping the assistance of the public to raise funds to help cancer patients in the CNMI, the American Cancer Society yesterday locked up government officials and key personalities in exchange of bail bonds.

Trumped up charges were filed against personalities who agreed to be jailed and bailed out by friends and supporters amounting from $100 to $4,000, ACS Relay for Life chair Ramon Diaz Jr. said.

Mr. Diaz said the ACS Jail and Bail 2001 program was part of the organization’s lineup of activities aimed at raising $25,000 to finance various programs including financial assistance for cancer patients.

He said at least 45 to 60 officials were listed to be admitted on its makeshift jail in Chalan Kiya where Chief Public Defender Masood Karimipour acted as officiating judge.

Jailed personalities include Lt. Gov. Jesus R. Sablan, Public School System Commissioner Rita Inos, Northern Marianas College President Jack Sablan, Saipan Mayor Jose C. Sablan among others.

Mr. Diaz said ACS hopes to exceed the $25,000 it has earlier planned to achieve. The fundraiser kicked off at exactly 8am and closed at 6:30pm.
