Seminar to gather Pacific educators

Around 160 are expected to convene next week for the Western Association of Education Opportunity Personnel’s 2001 Professional Development Seminar organized by the WESTOP Pacific Islands Chapter.

The training being held on Saipan for the first time will gather attendees from WESTOP member entities in the Pacific as well as local participants interested in professional enrichment.

Northern Marianas College Talent Search Counselor Lorraine Sonoda has invited CNMI-based educators to take advantage of the rare training experience which will be facilitated by no less than well-recognized experts from throughout the Pacific region.

Ten presenters from Western Kentucky University and representatives from the US Dept. of Education’s Office of Federal TRIO programs, the Counsel for Opportunity in Education and the Pacific Islands Chapter will conduct the training and workshops.

The seminar is scheduled from April 21 to 28 at the Saipan Diamond Hotel.

Interested PDS participants can now register or at the conference session kick-off on April 23.

Limited slots are available for on-island educators who are involved in or are interested in furthering educational opportunities for disadvantaged students.

Topics to be covered, include grant writing, objective writing, performance report preparation, hiring and motivating staff, evaluating staff, team building, counseling assessment, tracking students using the internet and administrative assistants’ training, among others.

A regional network of educators representing Guam, American Samoa, the state of Hawaii, the West Coast, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Republic of Palau and the Northern Mariana Islands are expected to attend.

WESTOP, the parent association, is comprised of educators from the states of Arizona, California, Nevada, Hawaii, and the Pacific Islands.

The association is dedicated in bringing together individuals interested in furthering educational opportunities for students from disadvantaged background.
