BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — Wild dogs chased and killed a 9-year-old boy Monday at a popular tourist spot in eastern Australia, officials said.

Police said the boy and a friend went for a walk near their camping site when two dingoes began following them, and mauled one of them to death.

Packs of dingoes roam many parts of Australia, but it is very unusual for them to kill humans. Dingoes have been known to threaten visitors to Fraser Island, which is a popular spot where the boys were camping with their families.

Queensland state Premier Peter Beattie said park rangers were considering killing all dingoes on the island.

“Police have taken full control of the situation here and the matter will be fully investigated,” Beattie said.
