The San Antonio Sixers are hoping to kiss their heartbreaking loss in last month’s MIBT goodbye by successfully defending their championship in the 2nd Annual Mayor’s Cup, which will roll off starting this Friday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

League coordinator Joey Dela Cruz said that like the MIBT, the Mayor’s Cup will be restricted to players14-18 years old and will be played through the weekend with the championship game scheduled on Sunday, May 23.

Already, four teams have been guaranteed slots for the confab. Joining defending champion Sixers with automatic slots are two-time MIBT defending titlest Saipan Red coached by Lawrence Rosario, Garapan Rollers coached by Joe Diaz and the Tinian All-Stars.

The Sixers, who are coached by long-time San Antonio mentor Ryan Nisperos, surrendered the finals to the Saipan Red All-Stars last month in the MIBT held in Tinian.

Dela Cruz said the winning team would take home a championship trophy. The tournament is expected to open its curtains this Friday, May 21, beginning at 6pm at the Oleai Sports Complex basketball venue.

There is no entrance fee for the Mayor’s Cup and teams could enter in a first-come, first-served basis. Deadline for entries, however, is tomorrow May 20. Participating teams must submit players’ proof of birth.

Last year, the Sixers led by Rowell Aranda, JR Ngeskebei, Bryan Flores, and guest player Gyles Ruluked crushed Tinian All-Stars, 86-75, to win the first-ever Mayor’s Cup at the Ada Gym.
