Are you ready for some football?
It’s only May, but the monsters of the gridiron are already meeting to discuss the upcoming season for the Commonwealth Football League.
Coaches, organizers and officials met Tuesday night at J’s Restaurant in Gualo Rai to discuss dates, times, rule changes, equipment issues, practice schedules and the basic requirements needed by each player.
Many of the same rules are still in effect, but the following are a few of the highlights of the meeting.
All teams are to have no fewer than 11 and no more than 50 players on their roster. In order for a player to participate in practice, they must submit their waivers and insurance forms. To participate in the first game, players must have their registration fee paid in full no later than Saturday, August 7.
Opening day will be Saturday, August 14, and though the schedule is yet to be created, the approximate time for the games will be at 10:30am.
This will be the fourth season for the league, and for only the second time in it’s existence, there will be no defending champion.
Last year’s champion, the Budweiser Predators, have disbanded, leaving a void at the top. The Miller Lite Barbarians are the only one of the five current teams to win a title, but that was two years ago, and there are a lot of new faces in the league.
Along with the Barbarians, this year’s league will tentatively feature the Verizon Islanders, the Guerillas, the Tinian Typhoon, and the brand new Pepsi Chiefs.
“It’s a whole new ballgame this year. The championship’s definitely up for grabs,” said the CFL chairman of the board John S. Blanco.
The next meeting of the CFL board members is scheduled to be held on June 15 at J’s restaurant on Middle Road.
